WHY WE CAN'T QUOTE A TRANSMISSION REPAIR OVER THE PHONE

WHY WE CAN'T QUOTE A TRANSMISSION REPAIR OVER THE PHONE

It is the most common call we get. The car is shuddering, or slipping, or the
dash has lit up, and the first question is what it will cost to fix. It is a
fair question. The honest answer is that anyone who gives you a firm number
on that call is guessing.

THE SAME SYMPTOM, VERY DIFFERENT REPAIRS

Take a shudder on take-off. Depending on the vehicle and what else is going
on, that one symptom can come from:

  • A torque converter clutch shuddering under lock-up

  • Contaminated or overdue fluid

  • A worn valve body or a sticking solenoid

  • A failing dual mass flywheel, which is not a transmission fault at all

  • On a CVT, belt or pulley wear

The cheapest of those is a service. The dearest is a rebuild. Same
description from the driver, an order of magnitude between the outcomes.

WHY A PHONE PRICE USUALLY COSTS YOU MONEY

A workshop that quotes blind has to protect itself, so it quotes for the
worst case. That is how people end up being told they need a replacement
gearbox for a fault that turned out to be a solenoid and a fluid change.

We would rather tell you we do not know yet.

WHAT ACTUALLY HELPS US

If you can, have this ready before you call:

  • When it happens — cold start, once warm, only under load, only at a
    particular speed

  • Whether it is getting worse, or has stayed the same for months

  • Any warning light or message, and the exact wording

  • Any fault codes, even ones read by a roadside patrol or a parts shop

  • What has already been done to it, and by whom

That last one matters more than people expect. A recent service, a battery
disconnection or a previous repair changes what we look at first.

NARROWING IT DOWN BEFORE YOU BOOK

There is now a faster way to do this than a phone call. Rhys, who owns this
workshop, built Furitech Autohaus — you
describe the fault in plain language and it matches your description against
40,000+ confirmed transmission repairs, then returns the most likely causes
with the reasoning behind each.

A driver report is $49, and that comes off your in-shop diagnosis if you book
with us. There is more detail on our
online diagnosis page.

IT STILL DOES NOT REPLACE THE HOIST

Worth being clear about this. A report tells you what is most likely. It does
not measure line pressure, road test the vehicle under load, or inspect the
fluid. We still do all of that before we quote.

What it does is turn a blank page into a shortlist — so the conversation
starts somewhere useful, and the diagnosis takes less of your time and less
of your money.
